It's been almost 24 hours since the 2007 WNBA Draft concluded. For the first time ever, there were surprise trades of the top two picks.
If Phoenix did not take one of the bigs available, they were expected to take Lindsey Harding and trade her. The question was to who. They had offers from Houston and Connecticut (who actually wanted Armintie Price) and likely other teams as well.
At the Lynx STH Draft Viewing Party, new coach Don Zierden came in to tell us they traded Tangela Smith for Harding before it was announced on TV. The move shocked the fans and players (Ohlde, Thorburn and Duffy) in attendance. The Lynx would not have been able to get Harding with McCarville, so the selection of Smith in the dispersal draft was a smart move. While the deal had been in discussion for a few weeks, it did not actually happen until Phoenix was on the clock.
Coach Z: "Ideally, we made five great picks, we as Roger said wanted to upgrade our athleticism; we feel we did that. We wanted to upgrade our point guard position; we feel we did that, and then in the second round we upgraded our rebounding."
In the second big trade of the day, San Antonio dealt #2 pick Jessica Davenport and a 2008 first round pick to New York for All-Star Becky Hammon and a 2008 second round pick. Since Hammon has been the Liberty's franchise player for a couple of seasons and Blaze has been reluctant to make big trades in the past, the move was pretty bold for Liberty to actually do.
The other picks from the first round that may have surprised some -- Houston selected Ashley Shields out of Southwest Tennessee Community College. And Ivory Latta dropped to the #11 pick for the Detroit Shock.
Voepel recaps the crazy day and Hays says the big winner may be the Sky.
