A rockin' Rutgers crowd of 8,000-plus rumbled at the RAC, and so did their team. Riding sophomore guard Epihanny Prince's career-high 33 points (27 in the second half), and a "55 defense" that came alive, the Scarlet Knights knocked conference rival UConn out of the ranks of the undefeated.
Lots of great New Jersey and Connecticut press on this one, but there was also some national coverage -- which is vital to the growth of women's basketball. Excuse me as I indulge (and don't forget to click on the links!):
Kelly Whiteside makes an appearance (you may remember her from the 1998 book, "WNBA: Celebration") writing for USA Today, and frames the game nicely: "The scene was set for what has become one of the most engaging rivalries in the game." (Now if only CSTV would be picked up by more cable companies, the rest of the company could revel in said rivalry.)
ESPN's east coast rep Graham Hays brings us some classic CViv: "I said this game would be good for a lot reasons," Stringer said in a something of a Zen moment after the win. "We would either find out who we are, or we would find out who we are. And we found out who we are." (I'm betting UConn fans are hoping they remember which "who" they found when Rutgers battles Tennessee next Monday)
The New York Times DIDN'T pull the rug out from us and sent Bill Finely, who caught newcomer to the rivarly freshman Maya Moore's take on the game:
Parity-shmarity -- it's RIVALRIES that get the blood boiling!

“This is probably the best time for this team to lose, if we were going to lose a game,” Moore said. “It’s still early in the season. But I don’t think this is one I’m going to forget.” (Yes, welcome to all that is what the Rutgers-UConn match-up has become. Luckily, thanks to the Big East Schedulers (no fools, they!) you'll have a change to avenge the loss on another Monday -- March 3rd.)
