There's a new NAIA Division II champion.
But first, a little about the Final Four, which featured three #1 seeds and a #2.
In the battle of the Iowas, Northwestern defeated Morningside handily, 93-69. Northwestern rode the three-point shooting precision of seniors Debbie Remmerde (7-10) and Amy Larson (5-8) to a large first half lead and never looked back.
The early game saw Hastings (Neb) battled Ozarks (Mo.) through two overtimes, but couldn't pull out the win.
Ozark Junior Lindsy Murry put back an offensive rebound to send the game into its first overtime, and it took a Kayli Combs' banked in a three-pointer with less than a second remaining to move the game to a second overtime. A Kayla Messick steal in the waning seconds the period sealed the 79-75 the win for Ozarks.
This marked the third time in a row the Bobcats had reached the Finals and, once again, they would walk out without a championship. A six point lead with seven minutes remaining evaporated under a 15-2 Northwestern run that eventually turned in to an 82-75 Red Raider victory. It was Northwestern's second NAIA Div. II National Championship.
Northwestern's Debbie Remmerde led all scorers with 41 points on 11-of-21 shooting and 14-of-14 on free throw. Remmerde was named the NAIA Div. II Player of the Year, as well as the tournament MVP.
A little bit about Remmerde, a player Terry Hersom called "perhaps the best shooter Iowa girls high school basketball has ever produced." Others may remember her as a University of Iowa player who gave up her scholly to play closer to home.
Yup -- they can play some basketball in the NAIA. Does the name Erin Buescher ring a bell?
Check out the D-I Championship action starting tomorrow. The first 30 games of the Championships will be video-streamed live, while the National Championship Game will air live nationwide on College Sports Television (CSTV).
