Well done, Irish!
The University of Notre Dame women’s basketball program proudly announced on Saturday that it has raised $103,750 as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone breast cancer initiative during the 2009-10 season. That total not only more than doubled last year’s fund-raising total of more than $45,000, but it also far surpassed Notre Dame’s preseason goal of $55,000 for the 2009-10 Pink Zone campaign.
Funds raised from this year’s Pink Zone events at Notre Dame will be donated nationally to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and locally to the Foundation For Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Women’s Task Force, which includes the Secret Sisters Society and Young Survivors group.
“It’s just incredible to see how the Notre Dame and South Bend communities have joined forces to take this fight against breast cancer to a whole new level,” Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. “The WBCA Pink Zone initiative has been an amazing catalyst in helping to spark the unity and teamwork necessary to make a difference and support everyone who is working hard to put an end to this disease once and for all. All of us in the Notre Dame women’s basketball program are profoundly grateful to those people who donated their time and resources to make this year’s Pink Zone event such a resounding success.”
The Irish went far and wide throughout the Michiana area in 2009-10, undertaking a variety of activities to raise money for the WBCA Pink Zone project, which is now in its third year of existence:
• Collections at each home game during the 2009-10 season
• Proceeds from the team’s annual Tip-Off Luncheon on Oct. 19
• Sales of special pink t-shirts, aprons and Fannie May candy bars
• Sales of “in memory/honor of” cards through the Varsity Shop
• Irish 3-Point Challenge (fans donate a specific amount for every three-pointer the Irish make this year — that total current stands at 157 treys, entering the NCAA Championship)
• Donations from Notre Dame women’s basketball alumnae, as well as the Notre Dame Monogram Club and local sponsors Superior Van and Mobility, Alick’s Home Medical and Lake Michigan Mailers
The Feb. 14 Pink Zone game also featured the following special events on the day of the game:
• A silent auction that featured more than 100 specialty items and entertainment packages, and raised $16,000, a full $5,000 more than last year’s total
• McGraw’s $10 donation for every rebound the Irish grabbed during the game (38 rebounds = $380)
• All 15 Irish players and student managers donated their $15 post-game per diem to the cause
• Booths inside Heritage Hall at Purcell Pavilion including Young Survivors Group, Bosom Buddies and Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center providing breast cancer awareness tips
• Fans received special trading cards (through a donation by Notre Dame’s College of Science) with trivia and other facts about cancer and the College of Science’s involvement in the fight against breast cancer
• A special halftime tribute to breast cancer survivors featured a performance by Ade Obayomi and Melissa Sandvig from Fox’s hit television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, as well as breast cancer survivor Laura Darnell singing “I Will Celebrate” accompanied by song writer Scott Allen, and a dance tribute from Debbie Werbrouck’s School of Dance to “I Run For Life” by Grammy Award-winning musician Melissa Etheridge.
