Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Last week brought more hearings and more disturbing news in the Rick Lopez case. Among other things, it was revealed that Lopez lived with the families of some of the girls he was sleeping with.

Not that this case isn't bad enough in itself, but what's really chilling is the thought that this could be the tip of the iceberg, that there are untold numbers of young women have lived through similar experiences and dealt with them alone, in silence.

See this story, eg.

Helen Wheelock wrote in today with these thoughts:

This isn't getting "out of hand" but the national reaction sure is too quiet for comfort... Consider there are over 100,000 girls and young women participating in AAU basketball programs and, while the vast majority of coaches are above reproach, there is no direct oversight or accountability within AAU. The casual and community based nature of the AAU "hierarchy" is one of its most charming, democratic and attractive features, but I have fears that as more of these stories come out, other athletes and parents will get a handle on their courage and shame and speak out and we will all be shamed at our lack of action and outrage. While I'm sure (at least I hope!) AAU, High School and Elementary Associations, the NCAA and WBCA are working on this, it would be so much more encouraging to see them come out and make a strong public statement.

Agreed.
