Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Monday, March 14, 2005

On the bubble, the Committee gave the last at-large bids to Va Tech, La Tech, Richmond. It left out Villanova, Iowa, Delaware, and Gonzaga.

Gonzaga men's coach Mark Few: "Obviously, you've got some people on the women's committee that don't know what the heck they're doing. They need to get some basketball people on there. That was unbelievable."

(And how many women's games have you seen this year, coach?)

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder: "When the Big 12 finishes behind you in the rankings and they do get six teams in, that's a little bit hard to take."

Delaware coach Tina Martin: "Virginia Tech getting in is a disappointment to us. Purdue getting in is a disappointment to us. Richmond getting in, with Kate Flavin being out with an ACL injury ... They lost in the A-10 semis to George Washington. Based on that and the fact that Kate is not 100 percent and she's by far their best player, they won't be the same team."

'Nova coach Harry, wise as always: "A lot of people thought we were a lock. I never thought we were a lock. We looked at the teams we're battling against and one of our problems was we had a couple of bad losses that really hurt us."

And: "I told the team that at 19-11, we thought we had a better chance to get in than not get in. I told them that they have to show a little bit of character, that making the tournament is not success, and not making it is not failure."
