Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Monday, August 15, 2005

The Sun took a giant lead over the Mystics, then almost lost it when the Mystics pressed. But starters made free throws, Lindsay Whalen managed one last fast break, DeLisha Milton-Jones' three-point attempt failed at the buzzer, and Connecticut clinched the Eastern Conference title with a 80-77 win.

Washington's comeback-- from nineteen points down to two down-- surprised everyone. The game looked well in hand until the last minutes, not to mention fast-paced and high-scoring; with Margo in Poland, neither team had a true center to clog up the paint or slow the game down.

The team celebrated retired Sun guard (and legendary defender) Debbie Black at halftime. It was (I think) Jessie's third Sun home game, and my second: the casino is a great place to see a game, not least because the arena is just the right size. 7500 people at Mohegan constitute a rockin' crowd; 6500 people at Minnesota's Target Center can generate complaints about empty seats.

Sun coach Thibault: "I don't think you can go home as a coach and feel good about how we played. It's put a damper on the day for me."

Nykesha Sales: "Oh yeah, I thought we were going into overtime... we kind of played a little complacent."
