Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Thursday, September 01, 2005

At ESPN.com, Bill Simmons trashes the WNBA. Same old shit: the women aren't attractive, the fan base is too gay, and the play is boring.

Random aside: yesterday, John Lopez said that the WNBA has made a mistake by ignoring the GLBT fanbase. Today, Simmons says that the league "aggressively courts" gays and lesbians -- "witness all the Gay Pride promotions over the past few years."

Who is correct?

UPDATE: Graham Hays responds. And well.
You're entitled to not like the WNBA. You're even entitled to dislike the WNBA. But do it for reasons that go beyond lame jokes, misogynistic insecurities and tired talking points. Do it for what's on the court. Because there's way too much time spent debating what the WNBA is off the court.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Kevin Pelton writes, "When you read Simmons's article, he wins."
