Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Friday, September 02, 2005

Bizarre night in Indy. The Lib scored only 16 points in the first half, missing a dubious WNBA record by one point. But then the Fever went on a 1-for-21 stretch and allowed New York back in. Indy's 28% field goal shooting narrowly missed the lowest ever for a winning playoff team.

This is the Fever's first trip to the second round of the playoffs. And yet last night's attendance was the lowest in franchise history. Fans wonder what's up.

I guess you can say that the sweep put us out of our misery.

"You exert so much effort just to get back into the game that, when it comes time to make that final push you've already made it just to crawl back into the game," said Becky Hammon.

John Dellapina of the Daily News:
The Liberty had played its entire season uphill, often seeming to require adversity to excel. So it seemed appropriate that New York's WNBA entry would spend the final game of the year climbing out of a hole of its own digging.

Somehow, with no plausible explanation other than its considerable experience and pluck, the Liberty made it all the way back to the surface. But only for a moment.
Vickie Johnson: "I can't even put it into words. I'm shocked. I thought we were going to win this game."
