Another tragic end to another sexual relationship between a coach and a young girl.
Last week, Lawrence Major, a teacher and coach at Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, was charged with several counts of statutory rape. The charges were based on allegations that he slept withone of his players a student over the course of three years, beginning when she was 14 years old.
Major was a popular coach and teacher who had appeared in a documentary about mentoring children.
Major was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned on Thursday. On Friday, he shot and killed himself.
Earlier this year, Helen Wheelock wrote an article (pdf) for the WBCA newsletter examining the issue of sexual misconduct by basketball coaches. The article was titled "Deafening Silence," and in it, Helen wondered, as I wondered, why there had been no institutional response to the problem.
UPDATE AND CORRECTION: Timber writes in to note that Major was the coach of the boys' team; the girl was in his gym class.

I keep waiting for some kind of response from the organizations I consider the leaders in women's basketball: the NCAA, the AAU and the WBCA.Still waiting...
