Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Here is the press release announcing the Westhead hiring.

Westhead, known as "the father of the fast break," worked for the last couple years in the Orlando Magic organization under Johnny Davis. After its disappointing season, the Magic fired Davis. Fellow assistant Chris Jent applied for the Magic job, and Westhead pulled his hat out of the ring to avoid competing with Jent.

Rather than going with Jent, the Magic decided to clean house altogether. In May, GM John Weisbrod resigned, and Orlando went outside the organization and hired Brian Hill as coach. Within a few days, Hill and the Magic unceremoniously fired Westhead and the remainder of Davis's assistants as well.

Summer rumors had Westhead coming up here to the Wolves bench, where Davis ended up, but it never materialized. Others hoped he'd return to the college game.

In the last couple weeks, Westhead has done a little freelance work in Washington. As Brian Serano reported, "it’s safe to assume that Paul Westhead, who coached a college team that averaged over 100 points per game, wasn’t brought to camp to instruct the Wizards on the basics of man-to-man ‘D’."

It's also safe to assume that the Merc are looking to move to a more up-tempo, offense-oriented style. That probably fits their personnel better than a grinding, half-court style... and it may please offense-hungry fans like me to boot.
