Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

As previously mentioned, Geno Auriemma's Knoxville trip this weekend includes a book signing for Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection, a new autobiography written with Jackie MacMullan, (who helps Geno's distinctive voice come through on the page). Make no mistake, this is no Remembrance of Things Past for the basketball set, but the anecdotes about players both famous and not-so-famous, along with Geno's touching coming-to-America story and a smattering of mea culpas (yes, even Geno Auriemma can eat crow), are just the kind of bio-fodder fans will love. The strongest writing, not surprisingly, is about the game itself, and the specific challenges associated with coaching the women's college game. And peppered throughout are Geno's signature, snarky jabs at the people he loves (and a few he doesn't love so much).

While not as interesting or well-crafted as John Walters' The Same River Twice, which followed the Huskies during their ill-fated 2000-2001 season (and how many teams call getting knocked out in the Final Four ill-fated?), Geno is still a lot of fun for die-hard UConn fans hungry for more opportunities to hear Auriemma being that big, lovable, blowhard we all adore (or despise, if you're from anywhere in the country besides Connecticut).
