Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Monday, January 09, 2006

Duke and Maryland came into Sunday's showdown in College Park as the two highest scoring teams in the country. But it was Duke's defensive pressure in forcing 24 Maryland turnovers and the play of Blue Devils Lindsey Harding and Chante Black that proved the difference in Duke's 86-68 .

The two only missed a combined three shots from the field and both posted a career high 19 points. The Blue Devils shot over 61% in the first half and almost 58% for the game. While Duke's post players Mistie Williams, Alison Bales, and Black battled foul trouble in the first half, they kept the Terps leading rebounder, Crystal Langhorne, from collecting even one in the entire game.

Although the second largest crowd (16,097) in women's ACC history did not see the close game they may have wanted, both coaches were positive in their comments. Coach G commented "I thought it was a great game. It's so nice to see so many people at the game. Maryland did a tremendous job bringing in the crowd again." Maryland coach Brenda Frese remained positive and upbeat after the game, thanking the fans and urging them to return. She insisted that this wasn't a setback for Maryland, only another step in a long journey.

Duke takes on Georgia Tech and Boston College this week. Maryland is off until next Monday, when it faces Florida State.
