LaTasha Byears has settled her wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit against the Sparks. As usual, the settlement included a confidentiality agreement, so we won't ever learn the terms of the deal or, for that matter, anything else about the case.
The most surprising piece of news is that the Sparks will invite Byears back to training camp.
"This is not the first time we've been gone after by a player or agent," team pres Johnny Buss said. "But if there is one thing I have learned from my father [Laker owner Jerry Buss], it is forgive and forget. That is on the Buss side of things. Will her teammates have a problem? That remains to be seen. But there is no problem as far as I'm concerned."
With the Byears suit gone, that leaves four big lawsuits pending in the women's basketball world.
1. Ferne Labati's suit against Miami.
2. Stacy Johnson-Klein's suit against Fresno State.
3. The Harlem Ambassadors' suit against the Globetrotters.
4. Jen Harris's suit against Rene Portland and Penn State.
The defendants in Harris v. Portland have filed their memoranda supporting their motions to dismiss the case. I am still working through the filings trying to make sense of the arguments — I'll have more on that before too long.
