Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

UCLA upset Arizona State in an exciting, if not baffling, Pac-10 semi: the teams traded free throws, and one-point leads, at the end.

Lisa Willis went nuts, scoring 27 and shooting 10-for-17. "I was in a daze the whole second half," she said.

ASU have a tournament berth locked up. UCLA split the reg-season series with Stanford and with ASU; their 19-10 record includes losses to UCSB (in overtime), Washington, and Cal. Does yesterday's win guarantee them a tournament spot?

In the other Pac-10 semi, Stanford flattened USC. The Cardinal held the Women of Troy to 26% shooting; Kristen Rappahan shot 4-8 from downtown.

USC coach Mark Trakh: ""Holy cow, they're a great team. Where do you beat them? They have all the ingredients."

And how good are the Cardinal? Stanford lost to Minnesota early because they hadn't figured out how to replace the outside shooters (King-Borchardt and Suminski) lost to graduation, and because Candace Wiggins comprised the entirety of their guard play. With Gold-Onwude and Rappahan stepping up, those problems may be gone. Newlin might struggle against a center her own size, but with the right bracket, Stanford could go a long way.
