Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Thursday, December 07, 2006

Chalk up another upset to the 2006-07 season: unranked Middle Tennessee State knocked off #8 Georgia 70-62. In Athens. Chrissy Givens scored 25 points and Georgia native Amber Holt added 21 to help lead the Blue Raiders to their first victory in 12 tries against the Bulldogs.

Let the parity mutterings start...

Meanwhile, UConn started out slowly against Georgetown, then just clamped down on defense and went to the races on offense. They finished the first half on a 23-0 and never looked back, defeating the Hoyas 84-26. Charde Houston continued her impressive junior season, going 6-for-6 with 5 rebounds in only 16 minutes.

On edit: An interesting follow-up to a comment made during the CPTV broadcast about the women's team getting access to the court. Says the Hartford Courant blog:
Apparently, Georgetown doesn't seem to be about gender equity when it comes to the school's basketball programs. Even though the tip-off for the women's game was 7:30, men's team practice didn't end until after 6:30. How considerate of men's coach John Thompson to FINALLY surrender the court.

Believe it or not, that is actually earlier than it used to be. Kara Wolters, half of the UConn's broadcast team on WTIC, said that when she played, there was an occassion when the women's didn't get on the court until 30 minutes before the game. Former GT coach John Thompson, the father, would keep his team on the floor that long. Like father, like son.
