A few days ago, we metioned the Toronto Raptors holding "Rainbow Hoops Night" this February 23 in support of a local lesbian basketball league. The uniqueness of that act was underscored by the reaction of some NBA players to ex-pro John Amaechi's decision to come out. (He played at Penn State and had a short pro career). Writes Carol Slezack of the Chicago Times
The ignorance of others doesn't detract from John Amaechi's brave decision, but it helps explain why the former NBA player waited until after retirement to come out. Unfortunately, it seems that no matter how far the rest of society advances, men's professional team sports remain grounded in a homophobic world.
