Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Lots of cities seem to be interested in having a WNBA team. Might Denver be next?

This article about the sports explosion in Northern Colorado quotes Dave King, owner of Triple Crown Sports. He and Triple Crown have a history of supporting women's sports: Triple Crown manages the Women's National Invitational Tournament and were behind the NWBL's Colorado Chill. But, anyone who's followed the NWBL knows they had a chequered history -- to say the least. Interestingly, King's Chill was an exception to the rule, though that didn't prevent him from eventually folding the team. Notes the article:

Four years ago King introduced the Colorado Chill, a professional women's basketball team playing in the National Women's Basketball League, to the Bud Center. King used his influence to convince former CSU standouts Becky Hammon, one of the WNBA's biggest stars, and Katie Cronin to play for the Chill.

The product on the court was solid - the Chill won two titles and just missed a third. And fan support was decent - better than King projected, in fact.

But the rest of the league was a mess and folded last year. King lost $680,000. "I have no ill will because of that," King said. "It was a great learning experience, and I'm a lot smarter about this region and this market because of it."

King may be wiser -- and still a fan of women's basketball -- but it's not clear he's ready to leap once more into the breach, dear friends.
