I write about it because what Maxwell did says much about our continuing uneasiness with women going where they’ve not gone before, and succeeding; about our quickness to blame any missteps on gender; about a continued yearning for a time, especially in so macho a place as the NBA, when women, simply, kept out of it.

We know we shouldn’t say that any more. That doesn’t mean an awful lot of us don’t think it.
