Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

The DePauw women won their University's first ever national championship by defeating Washington University 55-52 in the Division III finals. Said 14th-year Head Coach Kris Huffman:
“I am in a fog. It was one of our goals to reach the Final Four, but as far as winning a national championship, I am not sure if you are ever prepared to have it happen. Our girls responded at the end."
Though the Tigers were outshot and out rebounded, they scored 21 points off of Washington turnovers.
"We tried to make a run, but they controlled the tempo for most of the game," said WU head coach Nancy Fahey. "You hope the shots start falling, but you have to give credit to DePauw's defense."
DePauw's Liz Bondi, an All-American in basketball and tennis, was named the tournament MVP. In addition to her nine points, she grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and dished out three assists.

In the consolation game, Mary Washingtong defeated NYU 74-63. The victory for the Eagles gives the team 31 wins for the season, breaking the school record for season wins in the team's first-ever Final Four appearance. UMW's 31 wins ranks as the most wins in the nation among all 406 NCAA Division III teams this year.

The weather may have been crummy, but over 1,000 hearty folks made their way to Springfield to catch the game.
