Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Holly Warlick and Nikki Caldwell may be Ridin’ Down the Highway! *insert guitar riff here*, on their hogs, but Holly was kind enough to check in from Las Vegas as the Crusin’ for a Cause team waited for a mirror on their companion motor home to be repaired.

Yes, like any smart team doing a cross-country trek, they have a portable housing and a support crew – a representative from their sponsors (Fed Ex/Kinkos) and three friends who’ve decided to tag along and help with bike maintenance and, most importantly, directions. “It’s great,” said Warlick, “We just get up and go.”

And yes, while in Vegas she did “get up and do” what people do in Vegas. An old-fashioned girl, she avoids those new-fangled push-button machines and looks for the one-armed bandits. “I always do the Elvis slots. I did okay – won $100.”

The Cause they’re Crusin’ for -- breast cancer awareness -- is doing okay, too. So far, they’ve raised about $25, 000. “People asked me what I expected – and, to be honest, I didn’t know. But $25, 000 is pretty good.” Sure is – and you can add to the total by donating here.

They’re looking forward to rallies in Albuquerque (Sept. 6, Thunderbird Harley Davidson 4:00pm – 6:00pm, 5000 Alameda Blvd. N.E.) and Dallas (Sept 8, Dallas Harley Davidson 2:00pm – 4:00pm, 1334 W. Centerville Rd. Garland, TX.). Today, their “tour planners” have them visiting the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon – both firsts for her – and arriving in Flagstaff. (Check out their schedule here)

As for the challenges of the open road? Well, Warlick expected a sore backside, but that’s been nothing compared to the heat. “We came down Highway 1, along the Pacific Coast, and then all of a sudden we hit the desert.” 130 degrees of heat. Even the wind is hot.

But, says Warlick, their “tough day” is nothing compared to battling cancer. “The heat will go away. We can pull over for shade. The heat is minor compared to what women are going through – the chemo and the radiation.”

It’s that fight that inspired this ride, and Warlick and Caldwell welcome every chance they get to answer the question, “Why are you doing this?” Because when they answer,“people are ecstatic. They’re buying shirts and hats...they pull out their wallets when they hear what we’re doing.”

Which makes Crusin' Cool.
