The best officials tend to be almost invisible. Earlier this month, Darin Putthoff and Fred Shockey made a great call by being completely invisible...as in gone.
St. Mary’s Academy, a Catholic-ish school in St. Marys, Kansas, would not allow Michelle Campbell to officiate a boys' basketball game, because women in authority over boys does not comply with the Academy's beliefs.
Putthoff was to be the second official and refused to stay. Shockey was asked to fill in after working a junior high game. The former Army man declined, stating, "I have been led by some of the finest women this nation has to offer, and there was no way I was going to go along with that."
