Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Amidst the JC, NAIA, WNIT and NCCA tournaments, let's not forget that a group of guards playing with a couple of tall people have donned USA Basketball jerseys and are playing (actually, have just played) two exhibition games in Spain.

Game One: Playing in her first game for USAB in 5 years, Lindsay Whalen helped the US get out of an early 15-point hole and ended up with 14pts for the game. The result was a 82-72 victory over Spain’s top pro team, Ros Casares.
“Lindsay did a great job. I thought she showed her veteran experience, not just in the WNBA but also in the international game,” said 2008 U.S. Olympic Team head coach Anne Donovan. “She understands how to use her strengths, which is getting to the rim. I thought Sidney Spencer did a great job. She came in and had to play in the post, she put in a lot of post minutes for us. She really did a nice job getting on the backboard and helping with the flow of our offense. We had some unsung heroes tonight.”
Game Two: Trailing by 10 points with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, the US fought back and edged Perfumerias Avenida in overtime, 69-66. Leading the way for the USA was Seimone Augustus, who had nine of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter.
“Experience really comes through in the clutch,” said 2008 U.S. Olympic Team head coach Anne Donovan. “Seimone’s experience, not just with our national team, but with playing overseas, really knows how to get it done when we needed a bucket. I thought we had some good execution down the stretch that gave us some good open looks and players knocked shots down.

“(Perfumerias Avenida) rebounded the ball really well, which put us in difficult positions defensively, but their offensive boards was the difference early in the game,” Donovan said. “We’ve been together for less than a week and these two teams have been together all season and are the top two teams in Spain. We didn’t come in here thinking we were not going to get tested. That’s why we came to Spain, to get good competition.”
