It's still early, but the start of the Lynx season continues to surprise as they moved to 4-0 with a 94-83 victory over the defending champs.
Seimone Augustus led the Lynx with 22 points and was honored before the game, along with fellow Olympic teammates Cappie Pondexter and Diana Taurasi. But it was the rookies, the balance and depth of the MN roster that stood out in this one. Both Candice Wiggins and Charde Houston had double doubles and everyone who played contributed to the win. Wiggins ran the point most of the game and nearly tied Noelle Quinn's record by dishing out 12 assists. "It was easy when you have players that find ways to score," said Wiggins, stunned when told her assist numbers. "So it's really not me. It's just me finding the person.
Coach Z: "I thought everybody did something positive. In eight minutes, Vanessa had 10 points tonight, and Moore came in and gave us some great defense. As a coach, when everyone does something productive off the bench, it makes you sleep a lot better at night."
Lynx fans will love this from Big V: "I really love what is going on; it is awesome. We are a motivated bunch. I read a lot on the Internet about what people are saying about us and how we are going to be last in the West. Every game is a challenge. Everyone finally knows their roles. There are no prima donnas here. We have set a standard now that we have a target on our back. Minnesota is no longer a team that other (teams) can push around."
Lynx fans also oohed and aahed several times at Pondexter, who finished with a game high 31 points for the Mercury. She was guarded most of the night by Augustus, but hit several undefendable shots that impressed the crowd.
New .com blogger Dee Kantner was in attendance. Prior to the game, she held an entertaining and informative Q&A with local basketball officials (many who officiate MN high school basketball) and Lynx season ticket holders.
