Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

After inspiring it, Mike is now bucking for one...

The negative reaction to the World Cup should prompt soccer fans and women's basketball fans to stage a group hug. Women's basketball fans endure the same angst. Whenever their game is discussed in the national media, the self-important snobbery swells like a passenger's side airbag. Women's basketball is another hindrance, clogging up the airwaves. It's not cool to like it. Anybody who does like it gets mocked by colleagues. Hence, most discussion comes with a qualifier that it's hopeless, boring and forever rendered to page seven.

This just in, however: There aren't two sports in this country which have grown more than soccer and women's basketball in the last 20 years. And who knows? And who knows? Maybe it's true that all publicity is good publicity, whether the blatherers are informed or otherwise.
