Inane commentary on a game that deserves far better

The implosion at Minnesota continues. The body count now includes: Lauren Lacey, Britney Davis, Jamie Broback, Liz Podominick, assistant coach Dave Stromme, and recruit Kelly Mullaney, who rescinded her verbal. (Also, the year-end banquet has been closed to the public.)

Natasha Williams has apparently just announced that she is leaving too. That leaves essentially two returning players: Kelly Roysland and Emily Fox.

It was only two years ago that Minnesota made its miracle run to the Final Four. The program seemed ready to take elite status. This season has served as a painful reminder of just how quickly things can turn bad.

And it all takes place against the background of yesterday's national championship game, where former Gopher Coach Brenda Frese led her amazing young Maryland squad to a title. Frese's fast success at Maryland brings the Borton disaster into even higher relief.

(What is happening, you ask? It is impossible at this point to even begin to sort through all of the rumors flying around. The local papers have started digging, so we may know more soon. Or we may not.)

Silver lining: Maybe this will be good for the Lynx. For the next couple years, the place to see great women's basketball in Minnesota will be the Target Center, not Williams Arena. Welcome to Seimone and Shona... I'll get the bbq fired up...
